Audio and Music Engineering, Degree or Not?
Bill Jamson
Audio engineering degrees are not needed in the audio business, but they are helpfull. The real part of an engineering degree is that you get to get your feet wet and work in real studios with full SSL mixing boards etc, so you really get a handle on the professional techniques.
So, you may ask yourself what jobs can i get with an audio degree? Well, you can work in a real professional audio recording studio, or you can work at your own studio. With an audio degree you can also work live shows, which is a little bit different than mixing in the studio. But one thing is for sure, jobs with an engineering degree are not that hard to find.
Music has been around for many years, so careers in audio are going to be around forever, its just a case of weather or not its going to be done by professional engineers or beginner engineers.
Audio salaries very greatly. An audio salary really is up to you as an engineer. If you are doing your own mixes for people, well the sky is the limit now with the internet. You can mix, master a complete record right in your bedroom!
Don’t get caught up in audio online books, or audio engineering books. You really have to have hands on studio time to start becoming a professional audio engineer in the music industry these days.
After completeing a vocal training, many audio engineers will try to get a professional certification from the society of broadcast engineers. Once you get that, you will find that the sky is the limit. You can become an audio recording engineer, audio post engineer, mixing engineering, engineer for live sound, foldback engineering, game audio engineering etc.
