The use of Audio Visual Technology in the Music Industry
Sam D Goddard
Science and technology is advancing everyday. It is applicable to every aspect that we see all around us and the music industry is no exception. Before the invention of television and visual forms of music, it was only radios and transistors that people used to listen to music. And if it was a song from a play or film, they had to visualise the sequence in their minds only because there was no such technology to view the song. But times have changed, as science has also undergone a big advancement as far as technology is concerned. Today there are innumerable gadgets and provisions that enable you to listen, see and even carry music along with you. Audio-visual technology lets you enjoy music with still pictures, slides or videos simultaneously. There are so many gizmos and gadgets we use everyday that are based on audio-visual technology and makes the life easier, smooth and comfortable at the same time. As for example, personal computers (palmtop, laptop or desktop), televisions, projectors, multimedia technology supported mobile cellular phones (GSM or CDMA technology), portable Mp4 players, i-pods, i-phones and the list goes on. This can be called a revolution in the audio-visual technology employed in music industry. Gadgets such as palmtops, laptops desktops and projectors are mostly used in the business meetings of the large companies to make their associates and clients understand the agendas of the meetings. It might be a corporate video or it might also be a simple power point presentation with simple background music. But there is an important thing that you must keep in your mind that though these gizmos and gadgets make our lives simpler and easier still these are complicated as far as their technology is concerned. This is why it is required to have at least a certain amount of technical knowledge about these state of the art masterpieces. However, the music industry has used this amazing technology in a great way. And that is why audio-visual technology is the only reason that makes it possible for us to enjoy a movie or a music video. At the primary stage the technology was not so complicated or gadget oriented either. But as the technology kept upgrading itself it adopted all those upgrades accordingly and so it got more complicated as well. There are so many gadgets that are being used in the music industry in order to give the audience the desired audio-visual effect of the music, such as the mixer, the equalizer, the music out put speakers and boxes, woofers, sub woofers, highly configured computer and very expensive and useful software. Software is programmed execution files on which the computer runs on and executes the input command given by the user. The same process goes on when the music, music video, movie or any other multimedia media file undergoes editing. Mixer: A mixer is a sound editing instrument that is generally used to mix the key track with the other sub tracks. Though there are so many older versions of mixer that are still available in the market and in the industry as well but computers are taking them over day by day. This is because computer technology has proved far more convenient for the users, sound engineers and sound recordists than the traditional way of mixing. That is why the concept of the mixer in the audio-visual industry is going to be obsolete forever sooner or later and the computer technology will take its place. The Equaliser: The Equaliser is a very interesting, effective and important piece of equipment when it comes to sound editing. A single track of sound actually contains several frequencies. Some of them are based on bass and some of them are based on treble. Bass based frequencies are basically low pitched and treble based frequencies are generally a high-pitched frequency. This is why anybody can get confused if he or she does not have enough knowledge about frequency and sounds. The equaliser can help you out if you find yourself in such confusing situations. There is a console in the equipment and on that console some frequency controlling channels are there. You can control each and every bit of frequency by those channels. Some of them denote the reading in giga hertz or GHz and some of them denote in mega hertz or MHz. But, computer technology’s comfort and convenience is just outdating this older technology at a really rapid pace. The music out put speakers and boxes: The music industry depends a lot on the music output systems and technology. There are actually a number of different kinds of music output systems, speakers and boxes available in the market nowadays but you have to be very specific and reasonable about this very important part if you have your own set up and own sound track recording studio. This is because if you want to survive in this competitive and challenging field of the music industry you must know the intricate details about the latest technology of music output systems, speakers and boxes being used in the industry these days. The woofers and sub woofers: Woofers actually work as the great enhancers of the sound output. They basically enhance the bass part of the sound or the music. This is because, this part of sound or music is low pitched, and that is the reason why it needs to be enhanced as much as possible. Otherwise the contrast of the high pitched treble part and the low pitched bass part might not produce good quality sound. It could turn out to be a cacophony than a soothing music. The woofers are basically wooden boxes with one or more speakers with high wattage power output. And the sub woofers are the miniature form of the general woofers. They work as the support units to the general woofers. Together they enhance the sound quality of your music system or computer.
